1660 Alessandro Scarlatti – Italian composer of operas (some 115!) and religious works (d.1725); the father of two other composers, Domenico Scarlatti and Pietro Filippo Scarlatti.

1692 premiere of Henry Purcell's masque (or semi-opera) The Fairy Queen in London; the text is an anonymous adaptation of William Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream.

1752 Ludwig August Lebrun baptized – German oboist and composer (d.1790); married the soprano Franziska Danzi, the sister of Franz Danzi and one of the most outstanding and well-known singers of the time.

1810 Hans Christian Lumbye – Danish conductor and composer of light dance music (d.1874).

1843 Carl Michael Ziehrer – Austrian composer (d.1922); one of the fiercest rivals of the Strauss family; most notably Johann Strauss Jr and Eduard Strauss.

1905 Alan Rawsthorne – English composer (d.1971); tried studying dentistry and then architecture at Liverpool University, before becoming a successful composer; concerning dentistry, he said "I gave that up, thank God, before getting near anyone's mouth."

1936 premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf in Moscow; commissioned by the Central Children's Theater, the piece for narrator and orchestra was completed in just four days.

1947 Philippe Herreweghe – Belgian conductor and chorus master (72 years old); founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970 and in 1977 La Chapelle Royale in Paris.

1956 premiere of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Symphony No. 8 in Manchester by the Hallé Orchestra led by Sir John Barbirolli.
