Good morning, iOpeners. It's Friday, April 12, 2019. On this day in 1861, the Civil War began after Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay in South Carolina. The Civil War is the deadliest war in U.S. history.

Gov. Mike DeWine delivered on a campaign promise and signed into law one of the strictest abortion bans in the country.  The legislation effectively bans abortions after six weeks, when a fetal heartbeat is detectable.  DeWine, a Republican, said during the signing ceremony that the purpose of the legislation was to provide a “vehicle” for the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit Roe vs. Wade.

Former Akron mayor Don Plusquellic will not run for mayor this year.  Plusquellic, a Democrat who served Akron for 28 years, had been considering taking on fellow Democrat and mayor Dan Horrigan as an independent.  Plusquellic, who’s 69, says he ruled out running after considering the rigors of running a city and his desire to spend time with his grandchildren.

A man suspected of fatally shooting his girlfriend before killing himself was a firefighter and paramedic in Twinsburg.  The Akron Beacon Journal reports Demetrius T’Juan Butler shot and killed Oliva Hamey in the basement of her home in Goodyear Heights early Thursday while her two children slept upstairs. Police found Butler in the driveway of his mother’s home, five miles away.  He shot himself in the chest as officers approached.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and head coach Larry Drew have agreed to part ways.  Drew was charged with rebuilding the team after the loss of star LeBron James.  Kevin Love, the All-Star who was to play a critical role in the effort, played in just 22 games.  The Cavs finished their season 19-63.

Weather forecast: Cloudy and warm, with showers and thunderstorms.  Breezy, with 17 to 22 mph southerly winds with gusts near 40 mph.  High 69.  Tonight, mostly cloudy, then turning clear.  Low 46.  Tomorrow, Saturday, mostly sunny, high 58.  Sunday, rain, high 54.
